Is it OK to still enjoy the writings of OSC?

Should an author’s personal views effect your opinion of his/her work? Is it possible to enjoy an artists’s work even if you disagree with what they stand for?

This has been bothering for a bit now and the topic got brought up on a podcast yesterday. ¬†About a year ago I blew through the Hunger Games books in about a week, at which point a bunch of people suggested Ender Game as a natural follow up. I quickly consumed that and its following trilogy followed by the parallel Shadow series. In total I’ve read 12 books in the Enderverse with 2 more to be published soon. And there’s also a big-budget Hollywood movie coming out this fall.

At the time I had no idea that the author is on the board of director for the National Organization for Marriage and has contributed significant dollars and time to oppose gay marriage. He also questions global climate change and seemingly believes there is more evidence for intelligent design than there is for evolution.

So is it “ok” to still be a fan of his works? To anticipate a movie who’s success will most likely be funneled into campaigns of hate?
